The last weekend for us for skiing in 2010. The kids have gotten a lot better this year. A couple of pictures here.

USS Hornet
Sam’s cub scout troop (along with lots and lots of other cub scouts) spent the night on the USS Hornet. It is parked as a museum at the old Alameda Naval Base. After the museum closed, all the cub scouts filed onto the ship and were assigned bunks for the night. We had a couple of meals on the ship as well as being able to wonder around the ship and talk to the docents. Sam said it was one of the funnest things he did with cub scouts this year.
Another school play. This time Margaret was actually in it. (She did crew last year). I don’t quite understand why they have to copy things, this was a copy of Gilligan’s Island merged with Jungle Book. They like to take classic rock songs as well and change the words. This was one of the better plays, but 5th graders in Los Gatos are not like Fame.
Sam is just loving cub scouts. I don’t know if it is the uniform, running around with a bunch of wild kids, or what, but he is always excited about it. The latest escapade was building and racing of the Pinewood Derby cars. His buddy Simon came over to build/paint with him. The cars turned out great. The exciting day is race day.
Another year for the FLL Team. The Exploded Robots this year. Again, I think the kids did better than they scored in the tournament. For example, they got docked for not being excited about science and engineering. However, when Elizabeth asked them what they wanted to be when they grow up, the answers were, “Chemistry”, “Engineer”, and the like.
This year, Margaret talked to the Town Council for the project. The kids met “Citizen Ray”. I think that this was the real value of the program, learning how things work, but that kind of stuff doesn’t seem to count in the tournament. Oh well, I guess our kids will just have to learn stuff and be happy with that.
We were up in Tahoe and decided to go for a hike. We figured that it was mid September and that even the crowded places wouldn’t be. So we tried a hike that is supposed to be nice. Five Lakes near Alpine Meadows. It was a nice climb up to 5 alpine lakes. It turns out you don’t really see but 2 of them. There were a fair number of people on the trail. I just can’t imagine what it must be like in the middle of the summer when the place is crowded.
