Ashland

Day 1 of our trip around the Northwest. We stopped in Ashland. Elizabeth and Margaret and Sam are right now at a Shakespeare play in the Elizabethan Theatre. I am back in the hotel sleeping and getting the website up to date. Ashland is a nice little town. Seems full of retirees, people with dreadlocks and no shirts, and people from California.

UPDATE: They got home about 11:30 last night from the play. Apparently, Sam made it until about 10:30, then he was completely out. He didn’t move when the pedi-cab guy carried him to the door.

Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland

I drove up to Tahoe today for some work and a meeting tomorrow. Well, I took the Mini, not thinking it would be an issue. You can see what it looks like tonight.

Sunrise Lakes

I finally got off my keester and took the kids backpacking. We have been on lots of hikes with the kids and they do really well, I figured it was time to try a little backpacking. (I had taken Katy many years ago).

We got up Saturday morning and drove to the valley (Margaret had never been there) to pick up our backcountry permits and have the rangers help us make the final decision on where to go that night. We picked Sunrise Lakes in Yosemite.

So, Sam, Margaret, and I set off with overloaded backpacks to climb a 1000ft set of switchbacks. The kids did really well. Lots of stops on the climb up. We made it to the first lake and decided that was enough for us the first day. It was fairly crowded there were 5 or so other groups at this fairly small lake. The next day, we did a little bit of day hiking without the big packs and had a good time just lounging around not doing a whole lot. Then the next day we hiked out without stopping. It was easier with lighter packs and going downhill.

After we got back to the car, I took the kids up to see Tuolumne Meadows. I had to make them stop playing with their Nintendo’s so they could look at the scenery. In the end a great time was had by all. We will have to do this more often. Katy is lobbying for a camping trip without all the hiking. I guess we should do that relatively soon.

By the way, the picture above is Sam and Margaret pumping water for us next to our campsite.

Yosemite

Sam at the base of Lower Yosemite Falls

On the way to pick up the girls at Skylake, we decided to spend the day in Yosemite. Sam had never been. We bouldered a bit under Yosemite Falls, then went and did the Mist Trail to the top of Vernal Falls. The trail was more up than Elizabeth and I remembered, but Sam was a trooper and led us up and down.

Japan

Tokyo Tower

Katy got back from her trip with the Yonenaga’s to Japan. It sounds like it was better than we could have imagined. She got to spend some time in Tokyo as well as various other places. She got to experience lots of real Japanese culture with Jenna and her extended family. She dressed up as a Maiko (with the white face and everything). She got to stay in authentic Japanese hotels and homes. She ended up in Iwakuni where her Papa Jesse was stationed 40 years ago. Here are his pictures. I know that Katy saw some of the same things on her trip.
UPDATE: More pictures are here.

Maiko

While Katy was in Kyoto, she and Jenna got dressed up like Maikos. Elizabeth and I saw the pictures and didn’t realize it was Katy and Jenna.

Page Meadows

We finally all (except Katy) made it back to Tahoe for the first time in a very long time. After the first night, we thought we might have to go back down because Elizabeth’s feet up to her knees were swollen. Fortunately, a walk through Page Meadows fixed that. The dogs had a good time as well. Margaret took all of the pictures. This may be the best one.

Interbike

Ellsworth Tandem

I finally got to go to Interbike this year. It is the trade show for bike shop owners. I ended up just going to Vegas for the day and wondering around the show floor. It was really neat. All (almost) of the names in cycling were there. I spent a lot of time talking to the guys from Xtracycle. This was while I was building mine. Just took a few pictures of a couple of the things I saw there. Next year, I want to go back for demo days.

Elkhorn Slough

Katy in a Kayak

Katy and I went kayaking with the Yonenagas on Elkhorn Slough. It was lots of fun. Lots of otters and seals/sea lions. Katy really thought the seals/sea lions reminder her of me because they just lay around and grunt from time to time. You can also see what Jenna thought of the trip here.
