Sam’s Leg Update

Broken Leg

Sam went back to the doctor today for a follow up visit and more x-rays. He is healing really well, so that when we go back on August 9th, we hope to have the cast removed. Sam is also allowed to put some weight on the leg now, but he can’t really walk in it because his foot, ankle and knee are immobilized in the cast.

In other Sam’s leg news, many of the children and teachers at Art Camp signed his cast this morning. He is getting a bit tired of the cast, but is still remarkably upbeat about the whole thing.

The Tech

Katy Tech

Katy’s class went to The Tech today.

The kids took part in a Bouyancy lab, where they worked in small groups to make underwater exploration devices. Then they ate lunch. saw an IMAX movie, and explored the museum. “Rockets” propelled by water and Alka Seltzer were a big hit.

Construction Update

Steve
This is Steve, one of two of the foremen, on the roof at Tahoe. Both Steve and Galen are terrific carpenters and highly photogenic, but Steve wanted his picture on the website, so he got front page. If you click on the photo, another 75 photos of the house and crew will show up.

I went up to the house for the day last Friday, while Rusty watched the kids and slept off his trip to the Gulf Coast. As you can see, things have come a long way. The house is big. Really big. And beautiful, too. It’s better looking (and bigger) than I had pictured it. Still a long way to go, but it finally looks like a house (or a castle, as I think the locals have taken to calling it).

Bake Sale

Lemonade

Katy and her friend Olivia decided – all on their own – to hold a lemonade and bake sale to raise money for Katrina aid. After the neighbors spread the word, they had great attendance. Everyone had a good time hanging out outside, chatting with neighbors, and enjoying the Fall weather. More importantly, in two hours, the children raised $183.22 (a lot of people paid $10, or even $60, for a cupcake). They will divide the money between the Red Cross and Noah’s Wish, a group that rescues and shelters animals during disasters. All in all, a most successful Saturday afternoon. Photos next week.

UPDATE: Now up to $200.50.

Pumpkin Patch

Photo 626

Margaret’s kindergarten class went to the pumpkin patch. Sam and I went, too. It was a sea of children and pumpkins, noise and mud. The pumpkin pyramid and train ride were the highlights of the trip.

Pokie’s 40th

Friday was my 40th birthday, so Rusty took me to Yosemite (because he is a good husband). We stayed at the Ahwahnee; the kids stayed home (because Rusty is a good husband). We had a nice time, and on Saturday hiked to the top of Yosemite Falls, a 7.2 mile roundtrip with about 3000 ft elevation gain. We made it, although the trip took 5 hours. There were great views of the valley, although it was hazy. Click here for a whole bunch pictures from the trip.

Skylark Ranch

Katy went to Girl Scout camp in the Santa Cruz mountains. It was exactly the same as Girl Scout camp in Michigan 30 years ago, but with better scenery. Here are Katy, Rachel, Jenna and Holly making a fairy house in Fern Grove. You can see more photos here.

Sam in Sweater

Sam’s godmother knit him a beautiful sweater with car buttons. Today it was finally cold enough here for him to wear it (over his aloha outfit – he isn’t quite familiar with the changing seasons yet). He was quite proud of it and looked very handsome.

Labor Day Weekend

So far, the highlight of the long weekend has been the surprise visit by Eugene, Stacy and their girls. Here are some photos of everyone hanging out in the backyard, and from a trek to the Discovery Museum earlier in the day.
